Golf holidays in Spain: how to plan a Costa del Sol golf break

How we'd plan a golf break on the Costa del Sol from our self-catering apartment in El Paraíso, Benahavís: when to go, booking tee times, typical green fees, flying with your clubs, a sample 4 to 7 night itinerary and practical tips.

Golf holidays in Spain: how to plan a Costa del Sol golf break

Golf holidays in Spain don't get much easier than the Costa del Sol. You land at Málaga, drive under an hour along the coast, and you're in the middle of Europe's biggest cluster of golf courses. Our apartment at El Paraíso Golf Retreat sits in Urb. El Paraíso in Benahavís, with a golf course view from the terrace, so we've planned plenty of golf breaks in Spain from here for friends, family and guests.

This guide is the planning side: when to go, how to book tee times, what green fees look like, flying with your clubs, a sample 4 to 7 night itinerary, and why we think a self-catering base works better than a hotel for most golf groups. For the courses themselves, see our separate guide to golf near El Paraíso and Benahavís, which has drive times and what each club is like.

Why the Costa del Sol works so well for a golf holiday

The local tourist board calls this stretch of coast the Costa del Golf, and it has earned the name. Turismo Costa del Sol counts more than 70 golf courses along this coast, roughly two thirds of all the courses in Andalusia, and the area was named best golf destination in Europe by IAGTO, the golf tourism association, for 2025.

Benahavís itself is one of the most golf-heavy municipalities in Spain, with around a dozen courses inside its borders. From the apartment, El Paraíso Golf Club (a Gary Player design from 1973) is a few minutes away, and plenty of other Costa del Sol golf courses are within a 15 to 25 minute drive. That's the real advantage of basing yourself here: short transfers, more time on the course and less time in the car.

When to go: golf seasons on the Costa del Sol

You can play golf here all year, but the season shapes prices, tee sheet availability and how early you'll want to start.

MonthsWhat to expect
Mid September to mid NovemberPeak autumn season. Warm days, busy tee sheets, the highest green fees. Book early.
December and JanuaryLow season rates and easier booking. Mild, often sunny days with cooler mornings and the odd wet spell.
February to MaySpring peak builds from March. Lovely conditions, prices climb back up and weekends fill first.
June to AugustCheaper green fees, but hot afternoons. Play early in the morning or late in the day.

El Paraíso Golf Club describes October to May as its peak season and recommends booking ahead in those months. If you're thinking of an autumn trip, our guide to Costa del Sol weather in October and November has the real temperature and rainfall averages.

One thing people miss: many courses close for a week or so of greens maintenance once or twice a year, often around June and early September, followed by a recovery period. El Paraíso did exactly that in 2026. Check the club's calendar before you lock in dates.

Golf breaks in Spain: how to book tee times

There are three main ways to set up a golf break here, and they suit different groups.

  • A golf package. UK tour operators sell bundles of flights, a hotel, transfers and a set number of rounds. It's simple, but you're usually tied to one hotel and a fixed list of courses.
  • Booking direct with the clubs. Most clubs take reservations by phone, email or their own online booking. You get the club's own rules and current prices straight from the source.
  • A tee time agent. Local and online agents sell rounds at many courses, sometimes below the club's own rate, and some offer multi round passes. For example, one agent lists a three round pass in spring 2027 covering El Paraíso and two other courses at €403 to €429 per person including a shared buggy.

Our approach for a self-catering golf break is simple: book the apartment and flights first, then reserve your must-play rounds directly or through an agent before you fly, and leave one or two days open to decide once you're here. In peak months, popular morning slots go weeks ahead. One tee time agent notes that Tuesdays and Thursdays tend to have the best availability at El Paraíso.

A few booking details worth knowing:

  • Handicap certificate. Many clubs ask for one. Los Naranjos, for example, asks players to carry an official certificate and sets a maximum handicap of 27 for men and 35 for women.
  • Cancellation windows. These are often 48 to 72 hours. Read them before you book a round you might skip.
  • Four-balls. Clubs may add players to your group to make up a four-ball, especially in busy weeks.

What green fees cost

Green fees move with the season and the course, so treat these as a rough guide. At El Paraíso Golf Club, current booking site listings put an 18 hole green fee at around €140 to €150 in the autumn and spring peak, about €115 to €120 in the shoulder weeks of late November and February, and about €90 in December, January and high summer. A buggy adds around €45, and club hire is around €40.

The famous names cost far more. Real Club Valderrama, for instance, only offers limited visitor tee times and sits at the very top of the price scale. Mixing one bucket list round with good value local courses is how most of our guests keep a golf holiday affordable.

Getting there: Málaga airport, your clubs and a car

Málaga Airport (AGP) is the gateway for almost every golf holiday on the Costa del Sol. From there to El Paraíso is about 65 to 80 km, or roughly 45 to 55 minutes by car, depending on traffic and whether you take the AP-7 toll motorway or the free A-7. Our Málaga airport to El Paraíso guide covers taxis, transfers and the drive.

Flying with your golf bag. Rules depend on the airline, so check before you book.

  • Ryanair treats golf clubs as sports equipment for the hold, up to 20 kg, at €40 or £40 per one way flight if you add them when you book and €50 or £50 if you add them later. That's on top of any suitcase.
  • easyJet and Wizz Air also charge a separate sports equipment fee.
  • On British Airways, a golf bag counts as one item of your checked allowance if your fare includes a bag.

If you'd rather travel light, most clubs hire out sets. Reserve them when you book the tee time and say whether you need left or right handed clubs.

Hire a car. For a golf week, a car is close to essential. Taxis work for a single round nearby, but hopping between courses, the supermarket and dinner in the village adds up fast. Pick something with a boot big enough for your bags (an estate or a small SUV for four golfers). Our car rental in Benahavís guide covers prices, insurance and driving tips.

A sample golf break itinerary (4 to 7 nights)

This is how we'd plan a relaxed golf week from El Paraíso. Trim it to four nights by dropping the rest day and the last round.

  1. Day 1: Arrive and settle in. Pick up the hire car at Málaga, stop at a supermarket on the way, and watch the sun go down from the terrace. If your flight lands early, hit some balls at a driving range.
  2. Day 2: Your home course. Play El Paraíso Golf Club, a few minutes from the apartment, then lunch on the clubhouse terrace.
  3. Day 3: Something different. Pick a hillier course in Benahavís or a coastal one near San Pedro from our course guide. Dinner in Benahavís village.
  4. Day 4: Rest day. Pool morning, then an afternoon and evening in Puerto Banús. Tired legs recover faster than you'd think.
  5. Day 5: The big one. Your bucket list round, or a longer drive to a multi course resort. Book this one before you fly.
  6. Day 6: Early round, slow afternoon. An early tee time close to home, then a long lunch. Our pick of restaurants in Benahavís has ideas.
  7. Day 7: Last nine and home. A quick nine holes or a range session if your flight is late, then back to Málaga.

Self-catering vs a hotel for golf holidays in Spain

Golf hotels have their place, especially if the course is on site. But for a group of friends or two couples, a self-catering apartment usually works better, and it's how we like to travel ourselves.

  • Your own schedule. Breakfast at 06:45 before an early tee time is no problem when the kitchen is yours.
  • Space for a four-ball. Our apartment has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and sleeps four, so nobody queues for the shower after a round.
  • Cost. Splitting one apartment and cooking a few evenings costs much less than four hotel rooms and every meal out.
  • Somewhere to unwind. A terrace with golf course views, a communal pool and free parking for the car full of clubs.
  • Location. You're close to many courses rather than tied to one resort.

The trade off is that you drive yourselves and there's no concierge booking your rounds. With a car and a little planning, that's an easy swap.

Practical tips for golf on the Costa del Sol

  • Dress code. Expect collared shirts (with sleeves for men at some clubs), tailored shorts or trousers and soft spike golf shoes. Jeans, T-shirts, tracksuits and beachwear are usually not allowed.
  • Buggies. Many courses here are hilly, so a buggy is worth it. Clubs often allow a maximum of two buggies per four-ball, and some only let adults over 18 drive.
  • Summer heat. From June to August, book the earliest tee time you can. El Paraíso Golf Club opens to green fee players from 08:00. Carry plenty of water.
  • Winter mornings. Early starts can be fresh in December and January. Bring a warm layer and a waterproof.
  • Sun. Wear sunscreen and a hat in every season. The winter sun is stronger than it feels.
  • Pace of play. Clubs expect a steady pace. Los Naranjos, for example, sets four hours and fifteen minutes for 18 holes.
  • Arrive early. Allow time for parking, check-in and a warm-up, especially at a course you haven't played before.
