On a hot summer day I wanted something different from the beach or the pool. A local tip did it: walk the river through Benahavís, they said, it is a real adventure. They were right. The Benahavís River Walk means swimming in mountain water, scrambling over rocks, slipping a bit and, on a few spots, jumping in. It became one of my favourite day trips on the Costa del Sol, and it sits only a short drive from our apartment in El Paraíso.
This is the English version of our Dutch guide to the same outing. For the village itself, restaurants and more day trips from the apartment, see the Benahavís village guide, restaurants in Benahavís and things to do near El Paraíso.
What is the Benahavís River Walk?
The Benahavís River Walk follows a natural gorge on the Guadalmina river, with clear water you walk, wade and swim through. It is not a classic footpath. You simply follow the water: sometimes ankle deep, sometimes up to your shoulders. In places you can jump from rocks into deeper pools. The setting is green, rugged and deliciously cool, which makes it a brilliant escape on a summer afternoon when the coast feels sticky.
People also search for it as the riverwalk Benahavís or the Guadalmina river walk. Same place: the gorge above and through the white village of Benahavís, inland from Marbella and Estepona.
Guided or on your own?
I booked with Marbella Adventures for about €40 per person. The guides were good company, clear on the route and safety focused. They also give you a helmet, which is welcome on the scramble sections and when you jump from slippery rock. You can do the walk independently if you know the route and water levels look sensible, but a guide is worth it if it is your first time or you want the extra reassurance.
Check current water levels before you go. After dry spells the Guadalmina can run low; after heavy rain it can rise fast. Local operators and the tourist office in the village are the best real-time check.
What to take
Wear shoes with good grip that can get wet. No flip-flops. Swimwear or quick-dry sports kit works well. I took a small waterproof bag with a bottle of water and a towel. You park close to the gorge entrance, so valuables can stay locked in the car boot.
Who is it for?
You do not need to be an athlete, but it is an active outing. There is scrambling, swimming and optional jumping. Children from about eight can join if they enjoy adventure and are comfortable in water. In July and August it can get busy: go early in the morning or later in the day to miss the biggest groups.
If you want a gentler day in the same area, stroll the village streets and eat in Benahavís, or pick a white-village loop from our white villages near Benahavís guide.
My experience
From the first stretch I was buzzing. The first jump from a rock a few metres up was already a highlight. The guides kept things relaxed and safe. In places you pull yourself along ropes or scramble along narrow ledges, which feels properly adventurous without being extreme. Halfway through I floated on my back and let the current carry me for a moment. Pure freedom, and a world away from a packed beach day.
Tips
- Bring dry clothes for afterwards
- Use a waterproof phone pouch if you want photos
- Leave valuables at home or in the car
- Go early or late in the day to avoid crowds
- Ask about water levels and jump heights if you are unsure
Conclusion
Whether you love nature, swimming, a bit of adrenaline or simply something different during your stay, the Benahavís River Walk is worth trying. For me it was an unexpected highlight of the trip: action, nature, cool water and fun in one morning or afternoon. I will definitely go back. Pair it with lunch in the village afterwards and you have a full half day that guests remember.
